- What is a menstrual disc?
SHE Period Menstrual Disc is a reusable disc made of medical-grade silicone that is worn internally like a tampon but collects, rather than absorbs your menstrual flow. The disc provides a leak-free period experience and allows for mess-free period sex. The menstrual disc is inserted like a tampon, but easier!
- How does a menstrual disc work?
Menstrual blood flow from the uterus through the cervix (refer to attached picture), and the disc rests at the base of the cervix. This is how it collects blood and prevents any leakage. It works by resting at the base of the cervix. Once the disc is properly inserted, you will not be able to feel it inside.
- What is the difference between a menstrual cup and disc?
SHE Period Menstrual Disc is the evolution of menstrual cups. It can be used during sex. Yes, you read it right! It's completely safe, and you can have mess-free sex anytime you get in the mood.
In addition, the menstrual cup has suction which may cause some to feel uncomfortable when taking it out, due to the need to pinch the cup to create hole to let air out in order to take it out. However, the menstrual disc doesn't use suction, instead it uses gravity to sit at the base of the cervix. This allows it to be easier for insertion and removal the disc by gliding the disc in/out, with little to no discomfort.
- I'm scared to use/ it is so big! How to insert it?
SHE Period menstrual disc is soft and flexible, hence it can be easily folded to be inserted into the vaginal canal. In fact, during insertion - the tip of the menstrual disc is smaller than a menstrual cup, and almost the same size as a tampon! A menstrual disc may be more suitable for beginners. Don’t just take our word for it, watch here!
- Can anyone wear a disc?
Anyone who menstruates can use a menstrual disc! If you have any special concerns, just message us on IG @trysheperiod or email hello@sheperiod.com to talk :)
- Can menstruators with retroverted uterus use the disc?
Generally, we would not recommend you use SHE Period Menstrual Disc as it is suited for menstruators with high cervix. However, this completely depends on your body and how the menstrual disc fits you! Some menstruators who have a tilted uterus find they have difficulty getting the menstrual disc completely inside, but some have no issues at all!
- It's normal for blood to come out when I go to the restroom?
Yes, it is! This is also called the auto-dumping function, and it is considered a bonus function as compared to a menstrual cup, so you don't have to keep changing the disc! However, this auto dump function only happens for some, so it also differs from person to person.
When we are peeing, the bladder musculature puts pressure on the menstrual disc, so it's normal to experience some leaking. As soon as we finish, the disc comes back in place and the leak stops. So, no need to change the disc as it self-empties itself! :)
- Can you feel the disc while wearing it?
No! When the disc is completely inside your vagina, you cannot feel it! In fact, the disc feels even more comfortable than tampons!
- Can the disc get lost inside of me?
No. At some point in life, we all might have asked ourselves that question. Don't worry, your disc can't go too far. Your vagina is not a bottomless pit– there is only so far a cup can go. The vaginal canal is an elastic, muscular “tube”.
At the end of your vaginal canal is the cervix (the opening to the uterus) and it won’t allow anything past it! It can slip all the way up into your uterus. If your disc happens to be small and seems “lost” and you can’t reach it, use your muscles to work the cup down low enough to reach by bearing down, the same strain you use to poop and you should be able to reach it. Once you can reach it, get it out of there and consider a larger disc.
- Will the blood backflow?
No. The cervix is an exit only. Your flow cannot go back inside the uterus or other areas of the body.
- Can anyone tell when I'm wearing the disc?
Not unless you tell them! It will not be able to be seen or felt from outside. :)
- Can I pee while using?
Yes, your pee will not interfere with the disc. You can urinate and have bowel movements while wearing a menstrual disc. Urine is passed through the urethra, which is a different part of where the disc is inserted in.
The disc may move a bit when you use the bathroom due to its self-emptying function, so don’t be alarmed if you see a bit of red in the toilet. Simply use a clean finger to double-check that the upper edge of the disc is in place behind your pubic bone, just as you inserted it initially and it’s all good. :)
- Can a virgin use it?
Yes. You can wear a disc even if you haven’t yet had penetrative sex or even tried penetrative forms of masturbation. Also, virginity is a heteronormative social construct that we don’t really ascribe to anyway.
- Will it leak when using?
A properly fitting and situated disc should be entirely mess-free while worn.
- Why is it so expensive?
SHE Period disc can last for 5+ years, so it is very cost-efficient. One disc costs an equivalent of about only SGD0.83 per cycle, compared to the traditional SGD7.50 for 14 pads per cycle. Anyways, it is much more comfortable than pads or tampons, so why not make the switch! :)
- How to remove the disc? It sounds scary!
Simply tuck your finger below the edge of the disc and pull it out. Watch tutorial here!
- Is insertion of the disc painful?
There is a learning curve, and it might hurt when you are trying to fit the disc in for the first few times. However, after a few cycles, it should become effortless to insert and it should not be painful once it is inside. For easier insertion, we recommend using the SHE Period Lubricant.
- Can i use the disc when i go out?
SHE Period Menstrual Disc holds the equivalent of 4 tampons, and provides up to 12 hours of protection. Generally, the disc can last you for your day out or overnight without you having to remove and change it.
- Is the disc safe to use?
Absolutely safe. SHE Period Menstrual Disc is FDA approved, and made of medical grade silicone, which does not encourage bacterial or fungal growth. The disc is hypoallergenic (kind to your skin) and contains no harmful additives or chemicals (BPA and phthalate-free).
- Are SHE Period products vegan?

- Can I boil the disc?
Yes, it is made from high quality silicone, it can handle very high temperatures.
- What kind of soap do i use to wash the menstrual disc?
You should wash your cup with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free, water-based soap before and after use. We recommend SHE Period Foaming Cleanser - made from plant-based ingredients and hypoallergenic. It’s non-toxic for your body and ideal to protect your SHE Period Menstrual Disc.
- Can I exercise or work using my SHE Period Menstrual Disc?
DEFINITELY! One of the best things about SHE Period Menstrual Disc is the freedom to exercise and feel safe throughout your period. You don't need to worry about leaks or discomforts. Enjoy a hassle-free period!
- Can I swim with the disc in?
Absolutely! And because SHE Period Menstrual Disc has no string or stem, you can feel confident knowing that nothing is hanging out. Some people do comment that water gets into their disc or cup (likely due to the muscles used during their watery exercises) but this won’t harm anything and can obviously be emptied easily.
